Transportation Network Companies
The City of Seattle regulates the operation of transportation network companies (TNCs), which are sometimes referred to as "ride-share companies." Vehicles affiliated with TNCs transport people for compensation but unlike taxicabs and for-hire vehicles, they connect with passengers only through an online dispatch application using a smartphone or tablet.
In December 2023, the City updated the municipal code affecting TNCs to align with state TNC law adopted in 2022. City regulation consists of licensing and operating requirements for companies and their affiliated drivers and vehicles, and more information is available in Chapter 6.310 of the Seattle Municipal Code.
