COVID-19 caused widespread economic, social, and health-related loss, and deepened existing disparities in Seattle. Our most vulnerable communities – those with higher social and economic risk – had higher per capita cases of COVID-19, higher rates of hospitalization, and more deaths than communities with lower social and economic risk.
The City of Seattle has received nearly $300M in federal recovery funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The City accepted these funds in a series of four ARPA spending packages known collectively as the Seattle Rescue Plan (SRP).
The City is prioritizing equity and using SRP funds in a variety of ways to help with the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Uses range from making permanent capital investments in low-income housing and providing emergency rental assistance, to maintaining and expanding the public transit system, to supporting community groups, the arts, and small businesses, to piloting innovative new projects and investing in program measurement and evaluation systems.
