Meridian Playground Play Area Improvements

Updated: December 9, 2024

Fall 2024

Thank you to everyone who participated in the public process by attending public meetings and participating in the survey! Comments and insights from the public helped the design consultant refine several site layouts and play equipment options. All of the existing sculptures on columns around the upper play area remain, although the sandbox and steps between the upper and lower play areas will be removed. Active areas in the play areas will have rubberized surfacing to provide better accessibility for all. Online survey responses and submitted comments showed that many people liked more natural-appearing play equipment. This is reflected in the type of selected play equipment shown in the preferred concept design in the link below.

This project aims to make site improvements to the play area located within the western half of the former Home of Good Shepherd property. Most components of the play area were constructed in the early 1980s, and revised in 2002, and some equipment was replaced through a Neighborhood Matching Fund project in 2011. Several elements/features within the play area such as existing play equipment, art paving, play area ramps, custom-made v  slides, and rubber tiles need to be renovated or replaced.

In addition, this project will be making accessibility improvements to the restroom structure adjacent to the play area. Construction of both projects will be coordinated to minimize the length of closures.
