Women in Policing

The Seattle Police Department offers outstanding career opportunities for women and we strive to hire, retain and cultivate women in our organization.

  • Women serve in all ranks in our department, including top leadership positions
  • Women are historically under represented in law enforcement; currently women sworn police officers make up only about 15% of our department. We are committed to improving this percentage.

We invite you to find out why law enforcement can be a fulfilling and rewarding profession:

  • We offer outstanding training, advanced technology and the highest levels of safety and protective equipment.
  • We offer exceptional salary, benefits and retirement.  You can make $109K after five years.
  • Law enforcement is truly a career.  After five years in patrol, you can move around the department into a wide variety of detective and specialty units until you retire. It never gets boring!
  • There are no specific height and weight requirements or age limitations (although you must be 20.5 years of age to join.) You just need the ability to do the job. Many people join as a second or third career.
  • While officers work specific watches, many detectives have regular 9-5 hours.  Once you have been on patrol at least three years, we also offer temporary part-time schedules (up to one year) to accommodate caretaking needs.

The Seattle Police Department is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity in its workforce. At SPD we acknowledge and honor the fundamental value and dignity of all individuals and pledge ourselves to creating and maintaining an environment that respects diverse traditions, heritages, and experiences.
