Project Overview
What's a Neighborhood Greenway?
Neighborhood greenways are safer, calmer residential streets for you, your family, and neighbors. We make people walking and biking the priority.
Neighborhood greenways can include:
- 20 mph speed limit signs
- speed humps to calm traffic
- stop signs for side streets crossing the neighborhood greenway
- signs and pavement markings to help people find their way
- easier crossings of busy streets with crosswalks, flashing beacons, or traffic signals
We're engaging with people in the CID, Little Saigon, and Judkins Park communities to help us design a neighborhood greenway that connects residents with schools, restaurants, parks, shopping, and the greater transportation network, including Union Street Station. The new neighborhood greenway will bring affordable, active transportation options for all ages and abilities.
We are coordinating with the Little Saigon Streetscape planning effort, Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF), Safe Routes to School and other local projects.
One result is we'll be able to enhance the crossing at S Jackson Street to the Central Park Trail. In the early 1990's neighbors planned and advocated for this trail to help provide a connection between City parks in the Central District neighborhood. Read the materials in our project library to learn more about the history of the trail.
Vision Zero Spot Improvements: Little Saigon
Intersection improvements at S King St and Rainier Ave S were installed in early May 2018, including turn restrictions and temporary painted curb bulbs, allowing for the following legal vehicle movements at this intersection moving forward:
- People driving northbound on Rainier Ave S can drive straight, left, or right at S King St
- People driving southbound on Rainier Ave S can drive straight or turn right at S King St
- People driving westbound on S King St can turn right at S King St
- People driving eastbound on S King St can turn right at S King St
Please see the photo and map below for more information.
In the last few years, there have been several crashes in Little Saigon, including 13 crashes at the intersection of S King St and Rainier Ave S and 27 crashes at the intersection of S Weller St and 12th Ave S. Several crashes at S Weller St and 12th Ave S involved people walking and biking. To address this issue, our Vision Zero Program is recommending changes (see map below).
When the Neighborhood Greenway is built in 2019, we’ll upgrade these changes to make it easier to walk and bike at the Rainier and 12th Av S intersections.
To stay up to date on all project-related work, sign up for email updates. We’ll share project information and opportunities to stay involved as we move from design to construction.
