Beacon Hill Healthy Street

What's Happening Now?
18th Ave S and S College St Safety Improvements Completed!
Our crews recently completed the safety enhancements at 18th Ave S and S College St as part of the Beacon Hill Healthy Street. They painted a new marked crosswalk and installed and activated new crossing lights, also called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), pictured below.
The safety improvements also include new curbside push buttons for crossings, a new raised curb, ADA-accessible curb ramps, and drainage and stormwater improvements through Seattle Public Utilities. These improvements will make it safer to walk, bike, and roll along the Beacon Hill Healthy Street!
Before and After Photos of the newly installed safety elements at 18th Ave S and S College St, including flashing crossing lights and ADA-accessible curb ramps.
The next improvements planned for the North Beacon Hill Healthy Street will be installed at Beacon Ave S and S Hanford St. To explore the designs for these improvements, see the “Design Elements” section below. This spring, we will resume our evaluation and outreach for the South Beacon Hill Healthy Street.
Upgraded Temporary Sign Bases
We will be upgrading the temporary sign bases at key intersections along this southern segment to more durable concrete cylinders. The existing temporary signage has not been durable enough to withstand winter traffic conditions. As a result, our crews were overwhelmed last year with numerous daily requests to repair and replace signage all over the city. These temporary sign bases will be replaced with permanent planter boxes and concrete sign bases if this segment is made permanent.
Examples of upgraded temporary sign bases from the Central District Healthy Street.
