Andover and Dakota Pedestrian Safety Enhancements
Updated: July 13, 2023
This project is complete!
This project was completed in 2023.
Thank you to all who participated in the community prioritization process for this Neighborhood Street Fund project. We completed this community-requested project in 2023!
Project Overview
Elements
- Accessible (ADA) Ramps
- Curb Bulbs
- Concrete Panel Replacement
- Sign and marking updates
Benefits
- Safety improvements to the intersections will facilitate crossings for people walking and biking
- New ADA-compliant curb ramps will improve access
- Curb bulbs have been shown to improve pedestrian crossing safety
- Speed cushions have been shown to calm traffic speeds
Design
Earlier project materials included a marked crosswalk at 38th Ave S and S Andover St. This was an oversight, and the concepts on this page now reflect the proposed design. While a marked crosswalk is not included in the project design, the new curb bulbs and curb ramps will improve access and shorten the crossing distance for people walking and rolling. These improvements will also make people walking and rolling more visible to drivers and encourage slower vehicle speeds on 38th Ave S. Once the curb bulbs are complete, we can monitor this location to see if any additional improvements should be considered.
Project Background
This is one of the 15 Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by neighbors and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
Note: funds not used for this project will be returned to the NSF program budget.
Schedule
The NSF program runs on 3-year cycles to select, design, and build projects, but we had project delays this round with design updates and schedule impacts due to SDOT's work responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The application phase for the 2019-2021 cycle opened October 2018 and projects will be constructed in 2022 and 2023.
