Description:
A harbinger of spring, this tree is known for its deep pink flowers on bare twigs in early spring. Even in winter, this tree is beautiful. Great for locations under power lines. Prefers full sun or partial shade.

Where to Plant:
Perfect for under power lines or in small yard spaces. Not appropriate for larger yard spaces or planting strips without overhead power lines.
Leaves:
Heart-shaped leaves emerge a reddish color, turning darker green through summer and then eventually turning to yellow in fall.
Flowers:
Showy pea-like purple blossoms bloom in early spring before leaves and attract many insects and early season butterflies.
Fruit:
Flowers are followed by bean-like seedpods that mature to brown in summer.
Preferred Site Conditions:
The eastern redbud prefers full sun and partial shade. It's an adaptable tree and will grow in acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, and clay soils.
Potential Problems:
Susceptible to canker, verticillium wilt, leaf spots and blight and a number of insects. The best thing you can do to keep this tree healthy is to regularly water in summer and prune out dead branches.
