Description:
This stately tree is upright when young and becomes rounded with age.  It has rich, glossy purple leaves that turn copper in the fall. The smooth bark looks like an elephant hide and is maintained in to maturity.

Great specimen shade tree for your yard or in a wide planting strip without overhead power lines.

Leaves:
Leaves emerge a deep purple and maintain a rich, glossy purple luster until late summer when a shade of green is added. They turn a copper color in the fall.

Fruit:
Beechnuts are enjoyed by wildlife.

Preferred Site Conditions:
Full sun to light shade. Prefers moist but well drained soil.

Potential Problems:
Wooly aphids can be a minor problem, but they do not threaten the tree’s vigor or health.

Minimum Planting Distances:

  • 15 feet from house or building
  • 3 ½ feet back from the face of the curb
  • 5 feet from underground utility lines
  • 10 feet from power poles
  • 7 ½ feet from driveways (10 feet recommended)
  • 20 feet from street lights and other existing trees
  • 30 feet from street intersections
