Description:
This enchanting ornamental tree has a horizontal branching structure and showy white bell-shaped flowers that stand out against its dark green leaves. Attractive fruit in late summer and yellow fall color add to the all-season beauty of this tree.

Where to Plant:
A perfect tree for smaller planting strips under power lines. Can also be used for small yard spaces.   

Leaves:
Dark green leaves emerge 2 - 3 weeks later than is typical of the species. They turn bright yellow in fall.

Flowers:
White bell-shaped flowers in late spring are lightly fragrant and attract bees and hummingbirds.

Fruit:
A gray-green, egg-shaped drupe that hangs from a long stem and matures in late summer. The darker calyx on top with its wavy margin, looks like a hat.  

Preferred Site Conditions:
Prefers well-drained acidic soils but can tolerate sand or clay. Best grown in sun to part shade.

Potential Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Doesn't tolerate highly alkaline or heavily compacted soils.

  • 15 feet from house or building
  • 3 ½ feet back from the face of the curb
  • 5 feet from underground utility lines
  • 10 feet from power poles
  • 7 ½ feet from driveways (10 feet recommended)
  • 20 feet from street lights and other existing trees
  • 30 feet from street intersections
