Urban Stormwater Program

Field Studies and Teacher Professional Development

SPU partners with IslandWood to offer Seattle students a number of stormwater focused field programs, as well as support teachers in understanding and teaching about stormwater systems.

Creek-O-System Field Study

The Creek-O-System Field Study is a Next Generation Science Standards-aligned program for Seattle 5th grade students. The field study supports and localizes the Ecosystem Restoration unit taught in Seattle Public Schools. The program is offered free of charge to Seattle schools. More information and registration on the IslandWood website.

Duwamish River Program

The Duwamish River Program is specifically designed for 4th and 5th grade students from the Duwamish River Valley. Students experience the Duwamish River by boat while learning about the social and ecological history of the river, and exploring their own connection to this important waterway. Learn more on IslandWood's website.

Teacher Professional Development

SPU also partners with Islandwood to offer professional development to elementary teachers. Workshops are Next Generation Science Standards focused, and help teachers build an understanding of Seattle's urban waters systems. Participants leave with teacher-driven ideas for how to incorporate stormwater related phenomena into their own teaching.

Learn about upcoming professional development opportunities on the Islandwood website.
